About the event

Opening Night: The Louise Bennett-Coverley Heritage Council presents Bedward, a vibrant pantomime inspired by the life of Alexander Bedward (1848–1930), the charismatic leader of the Jamaican Native Baptist Free Church. Renowned for his powerful sermons and claimed healing gifts in August Town, Bedward’s life has influenced Jamaican folklore, visual art, investigative writing, and literature —including Kei Miller’s acclaimed novel August Town. This upcoming production continues our celebration of Jamaica’s rich cultural and spiritual history.

He influenced Marcus Garvey and inspired Louise Bennett – at last, the man behind the myths is revealed. The dramatic story of Bedward comes alive on stage with engaging characters and stirring music. Featuring the Jamaican Folk Revue performing traditional and newly arranged songs. Tickets on sale soon.
